Lagos State's "Master Craftsman Training Programme" Aims to Revolutionize the Housing Sector

In a move geared towards closing the skills gap within the housing sector, Lagos State has initiated an ambitious training project tailored to empower artisans and craftsmen in the field. Dubbed the "Master Craftsman Training Programme," this comprehensive skill acquisition endeavor commenced on the 19th of August 2023. Its primary objective is to enhance the competencies of residents, particularly the youth engaged in construction, thereby rendering them more employable. The ultimate goal is to uplift their economic prospects.

Mr. Kamar Olowoshago, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, has outlined the specifics of this intensive six-week training program. Designed to accommodate weekend schedules, it will focus on pivotal construction trades, including electrical installation and maintenance, painting and decorating, plumbing and pipe-fitting, carpentry and furniture making, as well as masonry (block laying and concreting). The curriculum will also encompass ancillary areas such as customer relations, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Health and Safety. The training will be facilitated by experts in the respective fields, ensuring that participants are well-versed in the latest industry trends.

This training program will be hosted at two strategic locations: Ikotun in Alimosho Local Government and Ikorodu in Ikorodu Local Government. Eligibility criteria stipulate that applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess evidence of registration with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, and have acquired fundamental training in these skills through either technical colleges or informal apprenticeships.

It is crucial to note that the selection process will prioritize punctuality, and application forms can be obtained from the Director of Administration and Human Resources Office at the Ministry of Housing in Lagos State.

One of the standout incentives for participants is that each certified master craftsman, who attains over 70% attendance, will receive certification from a reputable professional institute. Additionally, they will be equipped with modern tools of their trade, essential work attire, and stipends courtesy of the state government. Significantly, trainees will be provided with comprehensive insurance coverage throughout the training period, ensuring their safety during practical sessions.

Governor Olusola Sanwo-Olu's leadership has introduced this initiative to complement other ongoing endeavors aimed at increasing the availability of secure and decent homes for Lagos residents. In the past four years, the Sanwo-Olu administration has overseen the inauguration of more than 22 new housing developments across the state, rejuvenating the housing sector.

In addition to completing housing projects initiated by previous administrations, such as the 15 budgetary allocation housing schemes comprising over 5000 home units at various locations throughout the state, the government has fostered Public-Private Partnership (PPP) schemes with over 30 private investors. These collaborations have yielded significant progress, with over 70% of these schemes already completed and delivered.

The government's dedication to addressing the housing challenge has led to the completion of 19 housing schemes, including Lateef Kayode Jakande Estate in Igando, Courtland Luxury Villa, Igbokushu, and Lekki Apartments, among others. Furthermore, new collaborations have been forged with innovative building technology partners to expedite housing development in Lagos.

These collective efforts have generated over 21,700 direct employment opportunities at various work sites and earned Governor Sanwo-Olu recognition as the Housing Governor of the Federation.

The "Master Craftsman Training Programme" stands as a critical element of the state's strategy to construct safer homes for its burgeoning population. With the population estimated to grow by approximately 3.63% in 2023, the demand for decent housing has surged. The government's intervention, through subsidized homes and enhanced artisan training, is addressing this need, providing affordable housing solutions for low and medium-income earners.
